About us

Preserving and sharing knowledge about medicinal plants, natural heritage and the traditions of Tajikistan.

Our work

Knowledge about nature preserved through generations

Gulu Giyoh collects, preserves and shares information about medicinal plants of Tajikistan, their traditional uses and their importance to the natural and cultural heritage of the country.

One of the important goals of our work is to make this knowledge accessible to a wide audience and to preserve materials collected by researchers and local communities.

History

An organisation shaped by care for natural and cultural heritage

The public organisation “Gulu Giyoh” was established in 1996 under the name “Jamshed” to promote ethnic medicine, particularly medicinal plants and mineral springs.

Between 2011 and 2013, with support from The Christensen Fund, Gulu Giyoh worked to revive natural medicine practices and preserve the Ishkashimi language in Badakhshan, Tajikistan. The project cultivated local medicinal herbs and collected vocabulary, folklore, poetry and narratives for an archive and publications.

Since April 2013, Gulu Giyoh has developed a project focused on natural products from the Pamir region with support from its Polish partner, the Development Policy Foundation.

We also seek to raise public awareness of the properties of local mineral springs and their uses.

Our vision: the revival of the natural and cultural heritage of Tajik Badakhshan.

We see knowledge about plants not only as a source of practical information, but also as an important part of the history, culture and natural heritage of Tajikistan.
